Galleon Challenge! We've been learning about European explorers and their effect on the 'New World.' As a fun group challenge, teams of 3-4 students constructed 'galleons' from a list of basic materials in 20 minutes. Then, we tested each vessel in a large tub of water to see how much "gold" (marbles/painted rocks) each could carry before capsizing. They all floated and they all carried at least 40 marbles. Our largest load was carried by the 'Santa Maria, Jr.'-- 100 marbles + 33 rocks. Our research of the Age of Exploration has also led to opinion essays about the legacy of Christopher Columbus-- should he be celebrated or not? |
